PAOLO MEDICI
Biography
Paolo Medic was born in Rome in 1955 and was fortunate enough to work regularly in the studio of Maestro Corrado Cagli from 1969 to 1976.
In 1973, he completed a painting internship in Giorgio De Chirico's studio. Cagli was a great experimenter, and frottage was just one of many techniques he used. However, he was so fascinated by it that he made it his exclusive painting technique.
Frottage is a technique based on rubbing.
This technique was already used in ancient China and classical Greece to create copies of bas-reliefs on rice paper or parchment.
All of his works are created with waxy oil pastels, which are rubbed onto paper and then applied to canvas using a hot-press technique.
Until 2003, he used clichés by affixing them to the paper. Over time, however, he discovered that by rotating certain clichés, he could blend the colors and thus achieve a more compact texture. This discovery allowed him to better manipulate chiaroscuro and depth, thus achieving a more radiant complexion.
Although he remained predominantly figurative, paradoxically, his goal is to omit details and favor concepts, metaphors, and allegory. Through the symbols of our culture, he uses beauty as a tool for reflection.
For him, art serves to develop human consciousness and maintain contact with the depths of the soul. It is precisely the texture of the fleece of his works that he uses as a filter to transcend appearances.
